The Beauty of Persistence

A Motivational Journal Inspired by Niagara Falls

As a life-long Niagara Falls fan, I have always admired its beauty.

Recent life events have made me recognize the lesson Niagara teaches us... Persistence.

Water may have its twists and turns, but it always finds a way around obstacles. After overcoming cancer in 2021, I wanted to create something that would help me put some difficulties behind me, find focus, and move into a new, hard-won chapter in my life. Within these pages, I have written some thoughts on persistence. Things I needed to hear.

I hope this journal helps you find focus to achieve the things you want in your life.

About the creation of the Journal

I’m Karen Captline, and I live in Pittsburgh, PA with my husband of 22 years. Our most cherished family members live nearby. The majesty of Niagara Falls is just a four-hour drive away.

I have been a Niagara Falls tourist since I was eight years old. My parents instilled in their children a love of the place they had spent their honeymoon. I have taken over 100 trips to the area over the course of over 40 years. It is a second home to me and the people I love.

In 2020, my freelance graphic design business was taking a hit due to the difficult, unprecedented and turbulent times of the Covid-19 pandemic. I was lucky enough to find a book publisher as a client, so part of my workload became designing book covers which quickly became a favorite type of assignment.

While working as much as the pandemic would allow, I protected the health of my mother, and missed the freedom of visiting clients, friends, and my beloved Niagara. We all hunkered down and watched the months pass by. We were all lucky enough to enjoy good fortune and good health during this time.

In January of 2021, pandemic solutions were being found, but other health concerns emerged. I received a breast cancer diagnosis that set everything in my world spinning. Thanks to faith in God, trust in my doctors, and a little pixie dust — cancer was behind me by October. It was a stressful, eventful, and strangely beautiful time in my life - but that’s a story for another day.

In 2022, my husband was diagnosed with a birth defect - a bicuspid aortic heart valve that would need to be replaced at the age of 51. God’s kindness was shown to us once again. After surgery and a few months of recovery, he’s doing fine now.

We celebrated our new lease on life with a trip to Niagara in July of 2022.

Now I look forward to things getting back to normal. Okay, let’s face it, a NEW normal. I need to focus on what that looks like, and that’s where this journal comes in.

As I emerge from the twists and turns of the past few years, it’s hard to know where to start in the landscape of a changed world. I decided I wanted to publish something of my own. I wanted to create something that would help me move forward. I turned to my unique relationship with Niagara Falls to do that, and she inspired this journal.

Now that my creation has found its way to you, I hope you will fill it with your hopes, dreams, positive thoughts and plans for the future. When you feel your resolve waver, return to this journal and remind yourself that you can move toward the things that you want in life. And remember to count your victories and blessings along the way.

Let Niagara inspire you as she has inspired me. Not just by her beauty — but by her persistence.
